Wills & Estates

Many people generously support charities throughout their lifetime.  Some choose to make a legacy gift through their estate to ensure that support continues.

A gift made through an estate is relatively easy, enables donors to retain full use of their assets during their lifetime and frequently offers estate tax advantages that benefit their heirs.

There are four types of gifts by will, also known as bequests or estate gifts:

Specific Bequest:         A specific dollar amount or specific property (securities, real estate, artwork, etc.)
Residual Bequest:        A portion of your estate after any debts and specific bequests have been paid out
Contingent Bequest:    All or a portion of your estate only if other bequests cannot be satisfied (such as the death of another beneficiary)
In Memory Bequest:    Consider a gift in memory of a loved one, a perpetual remembrance

BENEFITS OF MAKING A BEQUEST

  • • You can designate your gift to a CASA priority that meets your interests
  • • A bequest is tax-effective. Your estate may claim the gift in the year of death equal to 100% of your net income in that year and the preceding year
  • • You have use of your assets while you are alive
  • • A bequest is revocable and can be changed if your financial circumstances change
While there is no obligation on your part to discuss your gift with CASA Foundation, contacting us when you are planning your estate will help us ensure your wishes are understood if you are no longer able to make them clear.  We recommend working together to create a simple fund agreement that establishes the terms of the bequest fund your gift creates.  This agreement does not obligate you to make the gift.  It simply helps ensure that we understand how you wish your gift be used once we receive it.

It is also a good idea to make your loved ones aware of your intentions to leave a bequest to CASA Foundation. If you wish, they may be actively involved in the fund established through your estate.

Gifts of Life Insurance

When you name CASA Foundation as the beneficiary of an insurance policy, you remain the owner and your estate receives a charitable tax receipt when the proceeds are paid out.  If you choose to make CASA Foundation the owner and beneficiary of the policy, you take advantage of current tax benefits.

The proceeds from life insurance policies may be directed to the CASA priority that interests you.

Ways of gifting life insurance to CASA

Existing Policies

By transferring ownership of an existing policy to CASA Foundation and designating CASA as the irrevocable beneficiary, you will receive a tax receipt for premiums paid after the date of transfer and a tax receipt for the net cash surrender value at the time the gift is made (less any outstanding policy loans).

New Policies

By taking out a new life insurance policy with CASA Foundation irrevocably designates as the beneficiary and owner, you will receive a receipt for income tax purposes for the policy premiums you pay each year.

New or Existing Policies

By assigning CASA Foundation as beneficiary of your policy, or the life insurance from your employer, your estate will receive a tax receipt equal to the death benefit proceeds paid directly to CASA,

Benefit of Naming CASA Foundation as an Insurance Policy Beneficiary

By working with CASA Foundation to create a letter of intent, you can designate your gift to a priority that meets your interests.

When you name CASA Foundation as the beneficiary of the policy, you remain the owner and your estate receives a charitable tax receipt when the proceeds are paid out.  If you choose to make CASA Foundation the owner and beneficiary, you take advantage of current tax credits.

A gift of life insurance is an affordable way to make a significant difference.

Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities and Mutual Funds

Donors may make gifts of publicly traded securities and units/shares in mutual funds and you will not pay taxes on any accumulated gains.  You will also receive a tax receipt for the full value.

Donors may make gifts of publicly traded securities and units/shares in mutual funds according to Canada Revenue Agency Guidelines.

Donors whose assets consist of appreciated stock will be encouraged to take advantage of the capital gain reductions that result from making a gift of these shares directly to CASA Foundation. The date of the gift is the date ownership is transferred to CASA Foundation. A gift receipt is issued for the value as of the closing date the shares are transferred.

Shares may be transferred by a professional broker.  Notice of the transfer and valuation should come to the CASA Foundation Fund Development Office for gift processing and issuance of a gift receipt.

Donors wishing to deliver shares to CASA Foundation directly should be advised to complete the assignment of ownership witnessed by a third party and by the CASA Foundation Fund Development Office.

If you would like to mail the shares to CASA Foundation, the endorsed shares should each be sent in separate envelopes, a stock power should be sent under separate cover.

Endowment Gifts

"Kids come first!" endowment fund for research in children's mental health. Endowment gifts help stabilize funding for CASA because they are invested, not spent.

The Endowment Fund for Research in Children's Mental Health was created by an initial donation of $5,000.  The purpose of the fund is to support clinical and evaluative research in child and adolescent mental health at CASA. CASA is involved in ongoing research projects including evaluations of programs to ensure continuous quality improvement in the services we provide. Your gift will ensure CASA's ability to provide this valuable service.

A percentage of the investment may be used annually to fund current and new initiatives. The balance of the investment income is re-invested to protect the fund against inflation.  This is the real ‘gift’ of endowment.  With this balanced approach, over a single lifetime, an investment of $50,000 today could result in future annual support for CASA of over $900,000.  And, your gift keeps on giving, and growing, forever.
